Why a simple IFR guide?
In the process of my IFR training, I realized that it takes a long time for all the pieces of the IFR puzzle to fall into place and somewhere toward the end of the course, everything came together for me. This, despite the fact that I had done the Cessna Pilot Centre course DVD's at least twice and read the entire "Cleared for Approach" book at least once with notes and annotations. IFR flying is simply too complex a "system" and needs to be digested to be fully understood. Hence, I decided to attempt to write from a clean slate a simple, concise and easy to understand guide to the entire system.
To be sure, this is NOT a complete IFR course and it should not be seen as a definitive reference guide to IFR flying. My aim, however, is to capture the salient features of the IFR system in one simple place and to improve it with your comments. I have started a "mind map" which I am gradually completing and would appreciate any feedback from our readers. Here is the mindmap and the PDF version of the guide. Naturally, this is a work in progress.
